event 1

The Male Mahadeshwara Maha Shivaratri Jathra is the most celebrated religious festival in Chamarajanagar district and one of Karnataka’s largest pilgrimage gatherings. The festival is held at the sacred Male Mahadeshwara Hills (MM Hills), a renowned hill shrine dedicated to Lord Mahadeshwara, who is revered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The temple is situated amidst the scenic forests of the Eastern Ghats at an elevation of about 900 meters, creating a unique spiritual atmosphere for devotees.

Major Attractions

During the festival, the entire hill town transforms into a vibrant spiritual center. Devotees arrive by foot, bus, and private vehicles from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and other states. Special rituals include Rudrabhisheka, Mahamangalarati, Bhajans, Kamsale folk performances, and grand chariot processions. The temple premises are decorated with thousands of lights, flowers, and traditional decorations.

One of the highlights is the Rathotsava, where the sacred chariot carrying the deity is pulled by devotees amid chants of “Uge Uge Mahadeshwara.” Traditional Kamsale dancers perform devotional folk dances dedicated to Lord Mahadeshwara, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Pilgrim Experience

Lakhs of devotees visit MM Hills during Shivaratri every year. Many undertake Padayatra (foot pilgrimage) through forest routes and hill paths as an act of devotion. Temporary food centers, medical camps, drinking water facilities, accommodation arrangements, and transportation services are organized by the district administration and temple authorities to accommodate the large crowd.
